Start with the surfaces that will remain
An exterior painting request should distinguish window trim, corner details, siding and other surfaces. Tell the contractor which areas you want painted and which existing finishes should remain. A front photograph alone may not show the rear or side details included in your request.

Preparation belongs in the written scope
Ask which preparation is proposed for each surface. Loose coating, open joints and material damage may require different responses. The suitable primer, coating and application details depend on the actual substrate and condition, not on assuming one system fits every exterior.
Where trim material is damaged, discuss trim repair separately. Painting changes the finish of retained material; it should not be presented as proof that a concealed problem has been resolved.
Compare color alongside fixed finishes
Window trim frames an opening and can contrast with the main wall color. Compare samples beside roof shingles, masonry and window frames that will stay. View the combination in daylight and decide which details should match or contrast.
If written color restrictions apply to your property, share them with the estimate request. This page does not assign an HOA rule to a whole city or claim that a particular color improves property value.
Coordinate related work without assumptions
If wall material will be replaced, compare fiber cement siding and vinyl siding as different scopes from repainting. If a gutter or roof-edge concern prompted the request, identify it separately through our gutter service or roof repair page.
